'Back on popular demand' - Dinesh Karthik turns weatherman ahead of Border Gavaskar Trophy
The upcoming Australia tour of India will be Dinesh Karthik's first commentary stint at home.
Dinesh Karthik has donned many hats over the course of his career. Cricketer, commentator, and now a weatherman. With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy right around the corner, Karthik announced his return as the ‘weatherman' for the course of the series. The wicketkeeper-batter was out of the national side after the 2019 ODI World Cup, and had taken up the commentary role in the 2021 season, before making a return in 2022.
The 37-year-old is all set to make his home debut as a commentator for the upcoming four-match Test series between India and Australia. Previously, Karthik commentated during India's tour of England in 2021, where he regularly gave updates about the weather on social media, which used to go viral quickly.
Sharing the news of his return to the role on Twitter, Karthik wrote, "The Weatherman DK is back on popular demand for India vs. Australia. First assignment today at 5.30 pm on Instagram." Interestingly, Karthik made his international debut against Australia as well, back in November 2004.
Fans react to Dinesh Karthik’s return as commentator
While the 37-year-old’s playing career seems to be on a pause currently, Karthik will be seen playing in the Indian Premier League 2023 next, representing the Royal Challengers Bangalore. With the Border Gavaskar Trophy all set to begin, Karthik will be playing his part behind the mic as India take on Australia in Nagpur on February 9.
Fans also reacted to Karthik’s return to the commentary box and many were quite ecstatic to see Karthik don the weatherman’s role once again. He confirmed his return to the commentary box with a Tweet recently and many fans guessed it right as he wrote: "Made my Test debut in India against Australia... Well, it's happening again!"
The tweet left a few wondering as well, as there were some who thought that the wicketkeeper-batter was making his Test return. But eventually, it turned out to be his return to the commentary box, which also marks his first commentary stint in India.
As the weatherman, Karthik has made the weather predictions for all five days ahead of the first Test. He predicted that the average temperature will be 18 degrees, and that there won't be any rainfall on any of the five days. His predictions during India's tour of England back in August 2021 were spot on as well.
