In the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL 2024-25) Qualifier match between Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Sixers, at the Bellerive Oval, a heartbreaking moment took place early in the game when a fan attempted to catch a six in the stands but ended up dropping it, visibly distressed over the missed opportunity.

The game began with Sydney Sixers winning the toss and electing to field first. Sixers made three changes to their squad with Mitchell Perry, Ben Manenti, and Kurtis Patterson coming in. On the other hand, the Hurricanes saw the return of Riley Meredith and Peter Hatzoglou to strengthen their bowling arsenal.

Meanwhile, the incident took place in the third over of the Hurricanes' innings. Mitchell Owen, who is in great form, smashed a 75-meter six off Ben Dwarshuis's bowling with a perfectly executed pull shot. The ball flew high into the crowd, and a fan, excited to claim a memorable catch, made a brilliant attempt to grab it.

Despite his best efforts, the fan lost his balance and fumbled, letting the ball slip through his hands. The crowd together was in shock as he tripped, however, it wasn’t the fall that left the fan heartbroken, but it was the sorrow of dropping a catch. The fan was visibly disturbed as he shook his head and went back to his seat.

Sixers need 174 to win BBL Qualifier

In the match, Owen’s innings saw him score 36 runs off just 15 balls, including three sixes and as many fours helping his side get off to a flying start. Though the Sixers managed to dismiss Owen and Matthew Wade early, Caleb Jewell and Ben McDermott steadied the ship. Thereafter, McDermott's (42) vital knock and Tim David's (25) cameo flourished the fag end of the innings. As a result, Hobart ended with a decent score of 173 on the board.
