Ahead of the 2024 Bangladesh Premier League final, Fortune Barishal and Comilla Victorians observed a minute's silence to pray for the tragic accident that happened in Dhaka on February 29. On Thursday evening, a fire incident took place at the Green Cozy Cottage Shopping Mall building at Bailey Road in Dhaka which killed at least 46 people as of March 1.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) through a Press Release expressed their sorrow for the families who have lost their lives in the recent massacre. They expressed their sincere condolence and wished for the speedy recovery of those who have sustained injuries or burns.

“The BCB mourns in the wake of this devastating event. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones in this unfathomable tragedy. We extend sincere wishes for a speedy recovery to those who sustained injuries and burns in the fire. We hope for their swift recovery and restoration to full health. Our thoughts are also with the medical personnel and emergency responders who are tirelessly working to provide care and support to the survivors,” the Press Release read.

Barishal skipper Tamim Iqbal too prayed his homage and called for a change to avoid such incidents in the future.

“Prayers for the departed souls at the Baily Road incident. We should change or it will never change!” Tamim wrote on his Facebook account.

Coming to the final of the competition, Barishal won the toss and elected to bowl first at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. The likes of James Fuller and Kyle Mayers put a lot of pressure on Comilla as they were reduced to 79/5 at one stage. However, Mahidul Islam Ankon and Jaker Ali tried to bring the team back into the contest as their partnership helped Barishal cross the 100-run barrier.

Despite so, Barishal would be confident of getting the job done. They have done a commendable job with the ball and if the batters do their bit, Barishal can eventually lift the title in the 10th edition of the competition.
