New Zealand locked horns with Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opener at the National Stadium in Karachi on Wednesday. However, in the first innings Glenn Phillips, in a moment of disappointment after failing to execute a shot as intended, almost hit on-field umpire Richard Kettleborough with his bat.

The incident occurred in the 46th over, with Pakistan's Naseem Shah delivering a ball that Phillips attempted to send over the boundary. However, he mistimed his shot, resulting in a single rather than a boundary. In a frustrating reaction, Phillips swung his bat, missing Kettleborough, who moved aside with both soon after sharing a laugh.

Meanwhile, Phillips once again displayed his brilliance with the bat, delivering a crucial knock of 61 off just 39 balls. His aggressive innings reminded many of his unbeaten century against Pakistan in the preceding tri-series. Phillips accelerated after a slow start, smashing his first six in the 43rd over and following it up with a series of boundaries against Haris Rauf and Shaheen Afridi.

His innings was laced with three fours and four sixes, playing a crucial role in guiding New Zealand to a total of 320. His 125-run partnership with Tom Latham shifted the momentum in favor of the Blackcaps.

Opting to bat first, New Zealand faced early challenges but found stability through Will Young’s century (107) and Latham’s unbeaten 118. Pakistan's bowling unit saw Shah and Rauf, attempt to make inroads but struggle to contain the Kiwi batters. Rauf, in particular, had a poor day, conceding 83 runs in his 10-over spell while managing to pick up two wickets.
