The coveted mega ICC (International Cricket Council) cricket showdown Champions Trophy 2025, is approaching the knockout stage of the 8-team tournament. While Group A has had a clear picture with India and New Zealand advancing towards the semifinals, Group B is yet to get two confirmed teams. As the marquee event progressed, Match 11 witnessed England (ENG) taking on South Africa (SA), on Saturday, March 1, in Karachi.
Skipper Jos Buttler after winning the toss, decided to bat first assuming that the pitch was quite decent for batting. Notably, before coming into this game, the Three Lions were already eliminated from the CT 2025 after consecutive defeats. The team only saw the veteran Joe Root coming good with the bat apart from the explosive opener, Ben Duckett. The rest of the batters failed to get going in the ICC event. The same continued as the decision to bat first seemingly backfired for the Buttler-le side. At one stage, they were already four down (99/4) within the 100-run mark and never really recovered after it.
Eventually, Root top-scored for the side with 37 runs off 34 balls. Among notable bowling performances, Wiaan Mulder and Marco Jansen took three wickets each to rattle the England batting unit apart from other bowlers who claimed the rest of the four wickets. As a result, the English side got folded for 179 in the 39th over.
In reply to the run chase, South Africa too felt the early jitters in front of a small target. They had lost two wickets early on with the score reading 47/2 in the ninth over after losing both the openers Tristan Stubbs and Ryan Rickleton. However, soaking up the pressure, the experienced Heinrich Klaasen and Rassie van der Dussen played sensible fifties and put up a match-defining 127-run partnership for the third wicket to put South Africa on the brink of victory. While Klaasen (64 runs off 56 balls) was removed by Adil Rashid, Dussen remained unbeaten (72* runs off 87 balls) as the Rainbow Nation won the match by seven wickets.

Speaking of England's bowling, apart from Archer who claimed two wickets upfront, only Rashid picked up a wicket, while remaining economical with his leg spin. With this, South Africa romped into the semifinals from Group B as the toppers while the Three Lions remained winless in the tournament. For his brilliant fielding efforts and three wickets (3/39), all rounder Marco Jansen was declared as the 'Player of the Match'. Meanwhile, here is how the England versus South Africa match triggered a meme fest between the fans.
