India got off to a winning start in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, defeating Bangladesh by six wickets in Match No. 2 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on February 20. A brilliant all-round performance, courtesy of Mohammed Shami's five-wicket haul and Shubman Gill's composed century ensured a comfortable victory for the Men in Blue.

After winning the toss, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto opted to bat first, hoping to put a firm total on the board. However, their innings got off to an underwhelming start as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Shami struck in the first over, dismissing Soumya Sarkar for a duck before Harshit Rana sent back Shanto for a two-ball duck. At one stage Bangladesh found themselves suffering at 35/5, with Axar Patel and Shami taking all over the game.

Just when it looked like Bangladesh would witness a batting collapse, Towhid Hridoy (100 off 118 balls) and Jaker Ali (68 off 114 balls) stitched together an important 154-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Hridoy, battling cramps, scored his maiden ODI century. Their fightback helped the Bengal Tigers reach 228 before being bowled out in 49.4 overs. Shami was the pick of the Indian bowlers, finishing with 5/53, while Rana impressed on his Champions Trophy debut with figures of 3/31.

Chasing 229, India got off to a good start, with skipper Rohit Sharma (41 off 36) and Gill adding 69 runs for the first wicket. However, Bangladesh struck back with crucial breakthroughs, dismissing Rohit, Virat Kohli (22), Shreyas Iyer (15), and Axar Patel (8) to see India's scorecard read 144/4.

Despite the mini-collapse, Gill, the No. 1 ranked ODI batter, made a fine century, scoring an unbeaten 101 off 129 balls. Partnering with KL Rahul (41* off 47), the duo stitched an unbeaten 87-run partnership to guide India home with 21 balls to spare. Rishad Hossain was the most successful bowler for Bangladesh, taking 2/38.
