India won the Champions Trophy 2025 by emerging victorious over New Zealand by four wickets with six deliveries to spare to win the ninth instalment of the tournament in grand style. This marked the Men in Blue's third triumph in the Champions Trophy.
The Indian skipper lost the toss for the 12th ODI in a succession. New Zealand got off to quite a decent start with the bat at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Rachin Ravindra was the dominant force of the two opening batters. The first six overs brought about 46 runs. Rachin was fortunate to survive a couple of opportunities which were not hung on to. However, he did not quite capitalise on his luck. Rachin fell to a wonderfully crafted googly by Kuldeep Yadav, who struck on the first delivery of his spell. Rachin's wicket brought Daryl Mitchell to the crease.
Mitchell could muster only 10 runs off his first 25 deliveries. However, he slowly but steadily got into his groove of being the dynamic batter he is. Tom Latham was the only batter other than Kane Williamson who failed to substantiate on his start. It was definitely not the easiest of pitches to execute strokes off the spinners. Mitchell's 63-run knock entailed only three boundaries. It was after 11 ODI innings that Michael Bracewell brought up a fifty-plus score. The batting all-rounder ended up unbeaten on 53 off 40 deliveries. Ravindra Jadeja conceded only 30 runs in his 10-over quota.
Apart from a few quiet overs here and there, the powerplay belonged firmly to India and Rohit Sharma in particular. Much like his recent knocks, he made full use of the fielding restrictions to go up and over the inner circle. By the end of the first 10, 49 out of India's 64 runs had come off the Indian skipper's willow. Rohit brought up his first half-century of the tournament on the first delivery of the 11th over. Meanwhile, Gill adopted a more composed approach.
A couple of quick wickets, including that of Gill and Virat Kohli seemed to have curbed the run flow. Gill departed courtesy of a blinder of an athletic grab from Glenn Phillips at cover. Kohli was trapped plumb in front by a Bracewell delivery. Due to the fall of wickets, Rohit had to tone down his approach too. He too departed for 76 while attempting a slap over cover.
Shreyas Iyer was slow off the blocks. However, his knock gained tempo. It was the second-consecutive time Iyer had fallen shy of the 50-run mark. It was KL Rahul's calming influence which once again took India through. The wicketkeeper-batter ended up unbeaten on 34 off 33 deliveries in the night of finals on Sunday, March 09.
