With their Champions Trophy 2025 victory, India won their first ICC trophy while being coached by Gautam Gambhir.  At the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on March 9, India defeated New Zealand by four wickets in the Champions Trophy 2025 final.  With this victory, India now has three Champions Trophy titles, more than any other team.

With India's Champions Trophy 2025 victory, head coach Gautam Gambhir thus became one of the greats. Gambhir's victory made him just the fifth person to win an ICC tournament while playing and coaching.  He joins a famous list that also includes South African Gary Kirsten, Australians Darren Lehmann and Geoff Marsh, and his old Indian teammate Rahul Dravid.  Gambhir's efforts to India's victories in the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2007 T20 World Cup were a high point of his personal playing career.

After the victory, Gambhir shared a heartfelt post on X, saying, "Congratulations to 1.4 billion Indians, Jay Hind"

Mitchell Santner's New Zealand chose to bat in the final and amassed a total of 251/7. Rohit Sharma's outstanding effort, which saw him score 76 runs off 83 balls, served as the cornerstone of India's recovery.  The team drew closer to victory, thanks to pivotal cameos from Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Axar Patel, and Hardik Pandya. Ravindra Jadeja finally sealed the victory on the final ball of the 49th over.

Gambhir's Champions Trophy victory was his first significant triumph after taking over as head coach instead of Rahul Dravid.  Another member of this elite group, Darren Lehmann, led Australia to victory in the 2015 World Cup after winning the tournament in 2003 and 1999.  In addition to winning the 1987 World Cup as a player, Geoff Marsh, the father of cricket players Shaun and Mitchell Marsh, held the distinction of being a head coach in 1999. Gary Kirsten won the 1998 Champions Trophy (then known as the ICC KnockOut Tournament) as a player and is well-remembered in India for his crucial contribution to the team's 2011 World Cup success at home.
