The iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai finally hosted its first game of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Saturday, October 21 as England and South Africa locked horns in Match 20 of the tournament. The Proteas emerged victorious in the match as they crushed the defending champions by a massive margin of 229 runs.
Apart from the dominant display on the pitch by South Africa, a heartwarming moment was also witnessed in the crowd during the match. A video of fans in the Wankhede Stadium chanting the name of the legendary India cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has been going viral all over social media.

Notably, Tendulkar was born in Mumbai and played a lot of cricket in his hometown. He also went on to realise his dream of winning the ODI World Cup at the same venue as India triumphed over Sri Lanka in 2011 to clinch their second ODI World Cup. Hence the fans never fail to celebrate the legacy of the great man by chanting his name during every game played in the city.

Coming back to the match, after being put in to bat first, South Africa lost their opener Quinton de Kock (4 off 2) on just the second ball of the innings. However, after the early dismissal, Reeza Hendricks (85 off 75) and Rassie van der Dussen (60 off 61) rescued the South African innings with their 121-run stand off 116 balls.
Heinrich Klaasen blew away English bowlers with his sensational hundred
Breathtaking innings from Heinrich Klaasen (109 off 67) and Marco Jansen (75* off 42) propelled South Africa to a humongous score. Reece Topley was the pick of the bowlers from England who picked up 3/88 in 8.5 overs.
In reply, England’s chase never got going as they were left reeling at 38/4 after 8.1 overs with Jansen accounting for Dawid Malan (6 off 11) and Joe Root (2 off 6) in back-to-back overs. Following that, there was no recovery for the defending champions and they were bundled out for 170 in 22 overs.

Gerald Coetzee was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa as he picked 3/35 in four overs while Lungi Ngidi (2/26, 5 overs) and Jansen (2/35, 5 overs) also picked up two wickets each.
