Indian cricket legend MS Dhoni has sparked excitement across the cricketing world with a mysterious social media post hinting at a "new role" for the "new season." Speculation is rife that the enigmatic message points towards Dhoni assuming a new responsibility in the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Scheduled to commence on March 22, the IPL's opening clash will witness reigning champions Chennai Super Kings taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Known for his reserved presence on social media, Dhoni typically shares any content. However, his recent Facebook post deviated from the norm, lacking any brand associations as he left his followers bewildered. With no clear indication provided, fans are left pondering whether this announcement hints at the 42-year-old's retirement or a potential mentorship role in the Chennai-based franchise.
"Can't wait for the new season and the new 'role'. Stay tuned!" Dhoni wrote on Facebook.

Amidst ongoing discussions regarding MS Dhoni's future in the IPL, there were speculations about his retirement following the former India captain's knee surgery in June 2023. Prior to that, the 42-year-old led CSK to their record-equalling fifth IPL title in 2023, triumphing over Gujarat Titans in the final in Ahmedabad. Subsequently, he stated that he will continue to play in the IPL if his fitness permits.

Dhoni's latest post could be an advertisement
Having last represented India in the 2019 World Cup semi-final and retiring from international cricket on August 15, 2020, Dhoni's leadership status for CSK for the upcoming season remains unconfirmed. His recent social media post has only added to the speculation, with fans debating whether it signals his retirement or a potential opening role. There's also an assumption that the post might be an advertising tactic.
Dhoni has been involved with similar advertising gimmicks prior to the 2022 T20I World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup. Similarly, Kapil Dev was seen "getting kidnapped" in a video in what later turned out to be an advertisement as well. Similar instances in the past point to the latest Dhoni post potentially being an ad as well.
