Sarfaraz Khan got dismissed for a three-ball duck in the first hour of Day 2 of the first Test between India and New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday, October 17.

After Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first in overcast conditions, New Zealand pacers made the most of the moisture on the surface as Tim Southee dismissed the Indian skipper to open the floodgates. Virat Kohli also tried to show some resilience in the testing conditions. Still, he failed to open his account in his nine-ball stay at the crease, eventually losing his wicket to William O'Rourke.

Sarfaraz walked out to the middle, returning to the Test team for the first time since the England series earlier this year. He replaced Shubman Gill, who was ruled out of the Test due to neck stiffness. Batting at No. 4, Sarfaraz faced a couple of dots from Matt Henry before attempting an expansive drive off the third ball.

The Mumbai batter tried to hit an aerial drive past Devon Conway, who was standing at mid-off, but in a squarer position than normal. Sarfaraz ended up mis-hitting the delivery, and Conway put in a full-stretch dive to grab the ball in his right hand. The ball had gone past the Kiwi opener's body, and it made the catch look even better. It was an excellent display of athleticism from the 33-year-old.

Rain stops play after intriguing first hour

When the drinks break was taken at the end of the 12th over, India were struggling at 13/3, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant trying to weather the storm and resurrect the innings. Jaiswal, who is a naturally aggressive batter, scored just eight runs after facing 37 deliveries as he tried to survive the sensational display of seam-bowling from the Blackcaps.

Four balls into the first over after the drinks break, the umpires stopped play as rain made an appearance in Bengaluru once again. Fans will hope that the rain relents soon, as the Test match has got off to an intriguing start. At the time of writing, the umpires were out for an inspection and the Super Soppers were in place. As a result, the play is expected to resume shortly.
