Cricket has given us a lot of heroes in India who have contributed to the game. While some heroes have shown their heroics on the field there have also been some individuals who have shown it while working behind the scenes. One of the people who come under this category is Milind Rege.

The story of Milind Rege is a perfect example of how someone can still make big strides in the game despite not reaching great heights while being on the field. Rege had a decent record in domestic cricket for Mumbai and also led the team. After retiring as a player Rege went on to contribute to the game as an administrator for Mumbai and the BCCI as well. Unfortunately, the date of February 19 2025 is also the day the cricketing fraternity lost one of their administrative heroes at the age of 76. The BCCI has also posted on social media mourning the passing of Rege.

“The BCCI mourns the passing of Milind Rege, former Mumbai captain and selector. A pillar of Mumbai cricket, he played a key role in its growth and legacy. His keen eye for talent and contributions as a commentator earned admiration across the cricketing fraternity. The Board extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the @MumbaiCricAssoc,” The BCCI posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Milind’s journey in Cricket

Milind Rege was a spin-bowling all-rounder for Mumbai from 1966 to 1978. He has played 52 first-class matches where he has scored 1532 runs and taken 126 wickets as well. He had taken three five-wicket hauls with the ball and eight half-centuries with the bat throughout his career.

After retiring from the game Rege continued to be associated with the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA)  and also went on to become a selector in the 1980’s as well. He eventually became the chairman of selectors in 2011 and though he resigned from the post after one year he got reinstated in 2015. He was also the West Zone representative of the Media Committee for the BCCI.
