Mitchell Owen scripted one of the unforgettable nights if his life. He grew up as a die hard fan of Hobart Hurricanes and supported the team from the stands whenever they played. As fate would have it, the young fan turned into an opener of Hurricanes at the age of 23 and was part of the playing XI in the final of Big Bash League 2024-25.

Chasing a target of 183 asked by Sydney Thunders, Hurricanes lost quick wickets but Owen who opened the innings took matters into his own hands, and notched up 108 off just 42 balls as Hurricanes clinched the title. Just before the night of the final, Owen shared his experience of his transitions from the ‘hill to the middle,’ and shared his fondest memories as a Hurricane fan and ultimately as the team’s player.

"Yeah, that's me. A little chubby fan sitting on the hill. Got heaps of great memories of watching the Hurricanes sitting on the hill, and luckily enough, it's a nice photo and someone recognized my head on there. Yeah, this has been here for probably five or six years now. It was a very memorable night you can see George Bailey there hitting the bomb and carrying on a bit. I think I chased down 160 against the heat,” said Owen in video uploaded by BBL.

“Maybe with an over to go. I honestly don't think I missed a home game. To be honest, yeah, some of my fondest memories as a young cricketer. I remember getting a nice photo with Xavier Doherty after he took a Hat-trick one game. We have to get that up and get that out there as well. But another game. Ricky Ponting actually gave me his gloves, which has also a photo. So we'll try and find that I was one of those little kids asking for everything and getting all the signatures after the game. So great memories, I'm very proud to made it this far,” he continued.

“Yeah. I think the proudest memory was obviously a couple of weeks ago getting 100 in front of the fans. I remember thinking out there that this is something that I've dreamed of for a long time, coming from the hill to the middle. Yeah, I'm super grateful for the opportunity, and hopefully we can go fire this tournament. Be here at the end,” Owen concluded.
