Shami shines for India at ODI World Cup 2023

Speaking of his on-field performances, Shami was a part of the Indian team in the recently-concluded ODI World Cup 2023 at home, which India ended up as runners-up. Shami, who was not included in the team for the first four matches, ended the tournament with a brilliant 24 wickets at a sensational average of 10.71 and an economy of 5.26, including three fifers and a four-for.

The right-arm pacer was included in India's XI only after an ankle injury ruled out Hardik Pandya and he took little time to make a mark, scalping a match-winning fifer (5/54) against New Zealand to bag the Player of the Match award. He rattled England in the next match with a four-for (4/22) before adding another fifer to his tally (5/18) against Sri Lanka. While he did not get similar success against South Africa (2/18) and Netherlands (0/41), Shami made up in the semi-final against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium, bagging a historic seven-wicket haul to help India qualify for the final.

Despite being a late inclusion, Shami managed to top the wicket-taking charts as he scalped one wicket more than the second-place Adam Zampe (23). However, his performance did not bring India the World Cup as they lost to Australia in the summit clash. Shami returned with figures of 1/47 in the final match of the tournament.
