In the 17th match of last season's BBL, Hobart Hurricanes clashed with Melbourne Stars at the Bellerive Oval, which witnessed a spectacular display of batting prowess from Nikhil Chaudhary. Positioned in the middle-order, Chaudhary's explosive knock proved pivotal for Hobart, who breathed life into their innings after a lacklustre start.
In a blistering innings, the Delhi-born 27-year-old smashed 32 runs off just 16 deliveries and stamped his authority with three boundaries and two towering sixes. His lightning-fast strike rate of 200 was a standout performance within his team which propelled Hobart's total to a competitive 155 and rescued them from a sluggish start by the top-order. Notably, one of Chaudhary's remarkable sixes came off the bowling of the seasoned T20 bowler, Haris Rauf.
Facing a challenging delivery outside the off-stump, Chaudhary adeptly shuffled on the leg side, creating space to target the shorter boundary. Despite Rauf's well-directed ball, Chaudhary showcased his ingenuity, slicing the ball over gully for a majestic six, that left the experienced bowler stunned.
Nikhil Chaudhary gradually burst onto the scene
Chaudhary's cricketing journey began in Punjab, where he played for the state's domestic team from 2017 to 2019 and featured in 12 T20s and two List-A matches. However, in pursuit of greater opportunities, he made a significant move to Brisbane. This shift was necessitated by BCCI rules, that mandated players to retire from Indian cricket to participate in overseas franchise leagues.
After he was picked by Hobart Hurricanes for the BBL 2023 season, Chaudhary made an impactful debut and scored 40 off 31 against Perth. His recent innings against Melbourne where he scored 32 off 16 deliveries, further solidified his reputation as a promising batting all-rounder and contributed significantly to Hobart's campaign in the tournament.
