The fourth Test of the ongoing series between India and Australia continued on Day 3 at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. India resumed their innings on 36/0 with Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma at the crease after Australia scored a mammoth 480 in their first innings.

Gill continued his sublime form and scored a brilliant hundred in the second session of the day. He reached the landmark sweeping a delivery by Todd Murphy which was going down the leg side and found the boundary at fine leg.

It was Gill’s second Test hundred after he scored his first one against Bangladesh in December 2022. Earlier, during his debut series against Australia in 2020-21, the 23-year-old missed out on a hundred as he got dismissed on 91 in the fourth innings of the historic Gabba Test.

Gill is in the form of his life as he’s scored two hundreds and a double hundred in his last four ODIs in January 2023. He further scored a hundred in T20Is in February against New Zealand as he smacked 126* off 63 balls which was also the highest individual score for India in T20Is.

Indian Captain Rohit Sharma couldn’t continue his innings on Day 3 as he got dismissed for 35 against Matthew Kuhnemann. He added 35 runs for the 74-run opening stand with Gill and gave a good start to the Indian innings. Following his dismissal, Gill got support from Pujara as the duo put in 113 runs for the third wicket. Pujara’s innings was cut short by Murphy who trapped him in front of the stumps and dismissed him for 42.

India need a win to qualify for WTC final

India are ahead in the series by 2-1 and need to win the fourth Test to seal a spot in the final of the World Test Championship. Australia have already qualified for the final which will be played from June 7 at The Oval in London.

If India lose or draw the fourth Test, they will have to depend on New Zealand to win or draw a Test in their ongoing two-match series against Sri Lanka. A draw or a win for New Zealand in any of the two Tests will clear India’s path to reach the WTC final.
