Indian young opener Shubman Gill was visibly frustrated with himself after he dropped a sitter to hand Marcus Stoinis a reprieve off Mohammed Shami's bowling. Gill, who was stationed in the slip cordon, could not cling onto the ball and was seen abusing in frustration of dropping the catch.

Veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami sent back young Aussie all-rounder Cameron Green with an absolute peach and could have added another prized scalp of Marcus Stoinis on the very next delivery, only for Shubman Gill to spill a routine catch. However, Gill made amends in the very next over of Shami, hanging onto a simple catch to get rid of Stoinis.

Australia collapse after Mitchell Marsh's rollicking half-century

The 23-year-old came full circle in Mohammed Siraj's next over as he put in a full-length dive to grab a stunning catch to dismiss Sean Abbott for a seven-ball duck. The Indian pacers wasted no time in getting rid of the lower-order batters, restricting the Kangaroos to a modest total of 188 runs with 14.2 overs to spare in the Australian innings. It is the lowest first-innings total at this venue in the last two decades.

Apart from Mitchell Marsh, who compiled a dazzling half-century on his return to international cricket, none of the Australian batters managed to capitalize on their start, especially senior pros Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith as Australia succumbed to the paltry total on a batting-friendly surface in Mumbai. Mohammed Shami, who went wicketless in his first spell, came roaring back into the contest, scalping three wickets in his second spell to trigger a woeful batting collapse by the Aussies. He received valiant support from Mohammed Siraj, who also accounted for three Aussie batters in the ODI series opener.
