On Day 4 of the third Test between India and England in Rajkot, Shubman Gill, starting at 65 off 120 balls, partnered with nightwatcher Kuldeep Yadav for India, stabilising the innings after two early wickets, pushing the score to 196. However, in the 64th over, Kuldeep's aggressive move backfired as he mistimed a shot to mid-on, prompting Gill to seek a risky single.
Ben Stokes swiftly fielded the ball, delivering a precise throw to Tom Hartley. Gill, realising the misjudgement, dove in desperation but fell short, trapped at 91 runs. His shot at a century slipped away, leaving him visibly frustrated. The unnecessary run-out reflected a missed opportunity for Gill, overshadowing his commendable performance thus far.

On Saturday, Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal showcased resilience, constructing a vital 155-run alliance for India following an early setback with the dismissal of skipper Rohit Sharma. Jaiswal marked his third Test century, while Gill exhibited determination with a well-earned fifty, accumulating 65 runs. Jaiswal had to retire hurt after notching 104 runs.
Gill assumed the role of the anchor, allowing Jaiswal to unleash against the English bowlers later in the day. Gill later combined forces with Kuldeep Yadav, forging a solid 50-plus partnership that mounted pressure on England on Day 4. Their collaboration propelled India's total close to 250, inching their lead closer to the formidable 400-run mark, asserting dominance over the opposition.
Shubman Gill fell short of a ton while under scrutiny
This was his second dismissal in the 90s. The right-handed batter had found himself under scrutiny after transitioning to the No. 3 position in Test cricket. Previously an opener, he was displaced by Jaiswal's emergence in the Indian lineup. Despite a lacklustre performance in Hyderabad, he rebounded with a stellar century in Vizag.
Had he converted his 91 into a century, he would have secured back-to-back hundreds in two Tests. Following a duck in the third Test's first innings and India reduced to 10 men against England, the pressure was on the Punjab batter to validate his Vizag triumph. However, with two more Tests ahead, he has an opportunity to solidify his place with another impactful innings.
