India and England faced each other once again in the second T20I of the five-match series at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Saturday, January 25. India won the toss and elected to bowl first.
For India, Washington Sundar and Dhruv Jurel replaced Nitish Reddy and Rinku Singh due to injuries and for England, Jamie Smith made his debut, replacing Jacob Bethell who is unwell while Brydon Carse came in for Gus Atkinson.
England did not have a great start as the openers were dismissed in single-digit scores. Skipper Jos Buttler (45 off 30) came to the rescue once again and formed partnerships with Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone who contributed 13 runs each. After Buttler's dismissal Smith (22 off 12), on debut, played an attacking innings but he was out in the deep while going for one shot too many.
Wickets were falling regularly but England were finding batters who were ready to fight it out. Brydon Carse (31 off 17) was going well and it looked like he would take England to a 170+ score but his unfortunate runout dented those chances. Eventually, England finished at 165/9 in their 20 overs. For India, Axar Patel was the pick of the bowlers finishing with figures of 2/32.

India had a subpar start to their innings. The hero of the last match, Abhishek Sharma (12 off 6), was out cheaply after hitting three fours off Jofra Archer. Samson did not last long either as he was out for a mere five runs in the third over. Tilak Varma (72* off 55) and Suryakumar Yadav (12 off 7) joined to form a 39-run partnership to provide a base for other batters to come. The latter chopped on a Carse delivery and his wicket brought another soon in the form of Dhruv Jurel (4 off 5). India were 66/4 after 7.4 overs at this stage with England well into the game.
Hardik Pandya (7 off 6) could not stay at the crease long enough after Jurel's departure as his wicket turned the tide in England's favour completely. Out came Washington Sundar (26 off 19) who formed a much-needed partnership of 38 runs. Varma, at the other end, was going at a steady pace throughout, keeping India in the game. There was another twist in the tale when Sundar got out and Axar (2 off 3) and Arshdeep (6 off 4) threw away their wickets when all they needed to do was rotate the strike or just allow Varma to take the strike as often as possible.
Ravi Bishnoi (9* off 5) combined with Varma and the duo brought India home in the last over with two wickets in hand. For England, Carse was the best bowler, taking three wickets. The balance of the game shifted several times in the dying phases but it was the hosts who prevailed to take a 2-0 lead.
