IND vs ENG Third ODI: Top 10 Memes from IND vs ENG, Third ODI
India won the match by 142 runs.
India and England clashed in the third and final ODI of the series at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Wednesday, February 12. With the series already decided in Cuttack in India's favour England came into this game to salvage some pride and get into a winning momentum before the upcoming Champions Trophy.
The visitors won the toss and elected to field first. Rohit Sharma (1 off 2), the hero of the previous match, could not get going as he fell to a peach of a delivery from Mark Wood in the second over itself. Out came Virat Kohli and formed a solid partnership with Shubman Gill. The duo set the platform for the batters to come, adding 116 runs for the second wicket. Kohli (52 off 55) played a sedate-looking innings but was dismissed by Adil Rashid with a ball that drifted away.
At the other end, Gill was going well, scoring boundaries at regular intervals. He then formed a 104-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer (78 off 64) who scored at a quick rate to give the innings a boost, allowing the team to post a big total. Gill (112 off 102), meanwhile, reached his century off 95 balls. After he departed in the 35th over, Iyer and KL Rahul (40 off 29) continued to pile up runs.
India received good support from the lower order to reach a commanding 356 in their full quota of 50 overs. Rashid (4/64) was the pick of the bowlers with almost every other bowler getting into the wickets column, barring Liam Livingstone.
England, as has been the trend from them this series, started off fantastically. Ben Duckett (34 off 22) was racing along, knocking boundaries to put pressure on the Indian bowlers. However, his innings was cut short when he miscued a pull to hand a simple catch to Rohit Sharma at mid-off in the seventh over with 60 runs on the board. His partner-in-crime, Phil Salt (23 off 21) who was going well at the other end, was the next to depart with the score on 80.
Tom Banton (38 off 41), who was making a comeback, was looking solid against the spinners and formed a potentially match-turning partnership with Joe Root (24 off 29). But both the batters fell in quick succession. The contributions from batters to follow were inadequate as they succumbed to the pressure of the required run rate. Gus Atkinson (38 off 19) provided a late flourish but it was all looking like a losing cause.
