On Day 5 of the first Test of the series between India and New Zealand, the visitors needed just 107 runs to win a Test in India after a hiatus of 36 years. India started well as Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Tom Latham for a duck on the second ball of the day. He even troubled Devon Conway (17 off 39) for a while dismissing him LBW as India sensed hope with the game slowly losing grip. 

But Will Young and Rachin Ravindra stuck to the crease and batted with ease to take the game away from India. The wicket aided spinners and the sun was out as Rohit Sharma introduced Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. The duo played the spinners sensibly and even hit timely boundaries as they unleashed late cuts and sweeps.

Young scored an unbeaten 45 runs smashing six boundaries and one maximum. On the other hand, Rachin plundered India in the first innings with 134 off 157 and remained unbeaten on 39* off 46 balls in the second. He smashed six boundaries as Kiwis chased the target just before the Lunch time. For India, only Bumrah was among the wickets in the second inning, he picked two wickets as India lost only the third Test at home since 2023.

India would be looking back at their start to the Bengaluru Test. They won the toss and opted to bat first. The decision turned out to be disastrous as they were bundled up for just 46 runs, their lowest total at home. As a result, New Zealand piled up 402 runs, fetching a lead of 356 runs and India just fought to come back thereafter.
