The star all-rounder Hardik Pandya who was rested for the third ODI game against Sri Lanka recently failed to make his bat do the talking during the first One Day International (ODI) against New Zealand at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday, January 18.

With centurion Shubman Gill looking in good touch at one end and with not too much damage done in the wickets column, it was a perfect opportunity for Hardik to make merry in the final ten overs of the Indian innings with his power-hitting exploits. However, that was not meant to be.

The middle-order sensation was dismissed before the conclusion of the 40th over. On the fourth ball of the 40th over, Daryl Mitchell bowled a length delivery on the line of the off stump. Hardik seemed in two minds and finally decided to get very low and work the ball towards the third-man fielder in the deep.

Unfortunately for him, he completely ended up missing the ball and the bails lit up. The New Zealand players started celebrating, but the on-field umpires were not convinced and as a result, decided to go upstairs to get the dismissal reviewed.

The ultra-edge technology showed that there was no bat involved and the wicketkeeper Tom Latham’s gloves were close to the stumps when the ball went past the wickets. After looking at multiple angles the third umpire KN Ananthapadmanabhan declared Hardik out bowled.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill batted well from one end and compiled his first-ever ODI double hundred. On the course of the same, the youngster also completed his 1000 runs in 19 innings and is only the second fastest to achieve this feat after Pakistan batter Fakhar Zaman who reached the 1000-run mark in 18 innings.

Earlier, Virat Kohli who looked in splendid touch heading into this contest, was castled for just eight runs by a wonderful delivery from the left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner.
