Rohit Sharma-led team India won a low-scoring contest by four wickets in the second ODI against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Upon winning the toss, Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka elected to bat first, a decision which eventually backfired as the visitors were sent packing for just 215 runs in under 40 overs of the contest.

The Men in Blue headed into the match with a lead of 1-0 as they emerged victorious in the first ODI in Guwahati. The onus was on Dasun Shanaka and Co. to not allow the hosts take an unassailable lead in the series. However, team India's middle-order steered them towards a win.

Sri Lanka started off the game well as debutant Nuwanidu Fernando and Kusal Mendis stitched a 73-run partnership off 66 balls, which gave them a decent head start. However, just when the side touched the triple-digit mark, wickets began falling in quick succession, which tilted the momentum and put the visitors on the backfoot. The Indian bowling unit immediately took control and dismissed the neighbours for an underwhelming 215 in 39.4 overs.

Indian middle-order executes rescue job in chase

While the chase should have been a cakewalk for the hosts, the Lankan Lions were determined to put up a tough fight in the second innings. What followed was a top-order collapse in the chase which quickly shifted momentum back to the Lankan side as Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli were all dismissed cheaply.

The onus was on the middle-order batters and KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya took matters in their hands as they constructed a vital 75-run partnership to revive India in the game. However, the visitors kept scalping wickets at regular intervals to hand India the occasional scares.

That said, Rahul stood firm till the end and scored a crucial half-century (64* off 103) which successfully helped the side chase down the low-scoring total. While India conquered the series 2-0, Sri Lanka will play for pride in the final ODI on January 15 in Kerala.
