The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met some of the Sri Lankan cricketers in Colombo, who won the ODI World Cup in 1996. PM Modi was on his two-day visit to Sri Lanka and arrived in the island nation on Friday. While the focus was to sign several key pacts and discuss on bilateral relationships, he made some time and met the cricketers.
On Saturday, Modi met some of the cricketers like Sanath Jayasuriya, Aravinda de Silva, Chaminda Vaas, Marvan Athapattu, Kumar Dharmasena, Upul Chandana, and a few others. The Sri Lankan World Cup-winning team also presented Modi with a beautiful memento. Modi and Sanath Jayasuriya took to social media and shared their meeting.
"Cricket connect! Delighted to interact with members of the 1996 Sri Lankan cricket team, which won the World Cup that year. This team captured the imagination of countless sports lovers!" wrote the visiting Prime Minister.

Sri Lankans will always remember the generous support: Jayasuriya
The Indian PM's official handle shared the moment on X by posting images. "In Colombo, PM @narendramodi interacted with the members of the 1996 Sri Lankan cricket team, which won the World Cup that year. Here are a few glimpses from their interaction" the caption read.
Sanath Jayasuriya, the Player of the Tournament from the tournament, took to X (formerly Twitter) and shared his moment of meeting the Indian PM. He was thankful for the opportunity and claimed it to be a memorable experience. He confirmed that the Sri Lankan citizens will never forget what PM Modi and India did to their country.
