India have taken an unassailable lead in the three-match T20I series against South Africa with a 16-run win in the second game at the Barasapra Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Sunday, October 2. Despite being put into bat first after the toss did not go in their favour, the hosts made sure that they had more than enough runs on the board to make South Africa give a run for their money.
While skipper Rohit Sharma and batting megastar Virat Kohli showcased outstanding performances with the bat, it was vice-captain KL Rahul's consistency and Suryakumar Yadav's blockbuster knock that stood out from the rest and eventually went on to power India to a score of 237.
The Men in Blue got off to a brisk start with Rohit and Rahul taking the attack to the Proteas bowlers right from the word 'go'. The duo added 96 runs in 9.5 overs before Rohit was dismissed for a well-set 43 runs off 37 deliveries.
Rahul followed suit soon after scoring a second straight half-century in the series - 28-ball 57. However, the duo of Virat Kohli and Suryakumar ensured that the visitors do not rejoice much thereafter as both of them staged a brilliant counter-attack.
With Suryakumar going berserk from one end, Virat played a supporting knock to perfection and allowed the former to do the most of scoring. The Mumbai batter registered an 18-ball 50 before a heartbreaking run out brought an abrupt end to his stay at the crease at an individual score of 61 off only 22 balls.
Kohli (49*) along with a quickfire unbeaten 17 from Dinesh Karthik powered India to a mammoth 237/3. For South Africa, only Keshav Maharaj (2/23) could create an impact with the ball.
In reply, it was indeed a mountain to climb for South Africa as they lost the wickets of skipper Temba Bavuma and Rilee Rossouw wthout many on the board. Meanwhile, Aiden Markram put up a good show scoring a 19-ball 33.
But it was the seasoned pair of Quinton de Kock and David Miller that staged a fightback for South Africa with a crucial partnership. However, the target was so mammoth that even their combined brilliance was not good enough to save the visitors as they eventually lost the battle.
Miller scored a 46-ball century and it happened to be the second one of his T20I career. Both him and de Kock were involved in an unbeaten 174-run stand for the fourth wicket. Miller remained unbeaten on 106 runs off 47 deliveries while Quinton de Kock scored a 48-ball 69*.
Arshdeep Singh (2/62) and Axar Patel (1/53) were the pick of the bowlers for the hosts.
