India’s Javelin Throw Star Neeraj Chopra bagged the gold medal in the men’s Javelin Throw final event in the 19th edition of the Asian Games being played in Hangzhou, China. The 25-year-old successfully defended his title with a season-best throw of 88.88m and secured his second consecutive gold at the mega event. Along with him, his compatriot Kishor Kumar Jena, also brought glory to the nation by winning the silver medal with a fabulous throw of 86.77m.

At one point Kishore had even surpassed Chopra’s best throw of 82.38m and was in strong contention for the gold. However, the 2020 Olympic gold medallist claimed the top position in style by launching the Javelin to his season-best distance in his fourth attempt.

However, the journey to their respective medals for both Indian athletes was filled with several hurdles as the duo were left betrayed by technical failure and wrong decisions by the Chinese officials. Notably, Chopra was asked to retake his first throw due to a technical failure in the scoring system.

The reigning World Champion had achieved a massive distance of around 87-88m in the first attempt itself which would have been enough to seal the gold medal. However, due to a bizarre technical failure in the scoring system, the exact distance of Chopra’s first throw couldn’t be measured.

As a result, the competition was put on hold for about 20 minutes and it was decided that the World Champion would have to retake his first throw. Without showing any disappointment, Chopra registered a distance of 82.38m in his second attempt.

Furthermore, Kishore Jena, the other Indian competing in the event, had his second attempt wrongly disqualified despite his front foot being nowhere near the white line. The decision prompted Jena to appeal against it and it was overturned after a couple of replays. Thankfully, the horrendous errors didn’t stop the duo from claiming the gold and silver medals.

Meanwhile, X was abuzz with reactions on Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Jena’s momentous achievement. Here are some of the posts:
