Delhi Capitals (DC) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squared off in the 67th match of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL), at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, on Saturday, May 20. The Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side crushed DC by 77 runs, securing their spot in the IPL 2023 playoffs.
After winning the toss against DC, CSK skipper Dhoni opted to bat first. Openers, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway, gave CSK an explosive start and stitched a 141-run stand, which is also CSK's fourth-highest opening partnership. Gaikwad scored a 50-ball 79 runs, including three boundaries and seven maximums. Conway, on the other hand, smashed 87 off 52 deliveries with the help of 11 fours and three sixes.
After Chetan Sakariya dismissed Gaikwad, Shivam Dube came in as the number three batter. He smashed a nine-ball 22 runs before being dismissed by Khaleel Ahmed. Later all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja played a quick-fire knock, scoring an unbeaten 20 off seven deliveries, and guided CSK to post a mammoth 223 runs in 20 overs.
Deepak Chahar picks 3 as CSK beat DC by 77 runs to book a playoff berth
During the run chase, DC failed to get off to a good start. Tushar Deshpande handed CSK a huge breakthrough by dismissing opener, Prithvi Shaw, in the very second over of Delhi's innings. Thereafter, Phil Salt joined skipper, David Warner, in the middle but soon after fell prey to the pacer, Deepak Chahar. Moreover, Chahar struck again on the very next delivery, dismissing Rilee Rossouw for a duck.
As the wickets continued to fall from one end, Warner stood up for his team and scored 86 off 58 deliveries before being dismissed by a well-disguised slower ball by Matheesha Pathirana. His knock was studded with seven boundaries and five maximums. Albeit, the Australian's efforts went in vain as DC could only manage 146 in 20 overs, ending their campaign on a disappointing note.
For CSK, Deepak Chahar claimed a three-wicket haul, while Maheesh Theekshana and the Impact Player, Matheesha Pathirana, picked two wickets each. Apart from them Deshpande and Jadeja made one scalp each and helped the four-time IPL champions to seal their spot in the playoff.
Consequently, this triggered a meme fest and fans took to Twitter to express themselves.
