The mind-boggling action continued in the Indian Premier League 2023 as Gujarat Titans hosted Lucknow Super Giants in Match 51 on Sunday, May 7 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. At the toss, Pandya brothers- Hardik and Krunal- walked out to the middle as captains of GT and LSG respectively.
Lucknow won the toss and invited Gujarat to bat first as GT openers Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha got their team off to an incredible start. The duo added 142 runs for the first wicket off just 74 balls as Saha took LSG's bowling unit to the cleaners. He played a scintillating knock of 81 off 43 balls smashing 10 fours and four sixes.
Following his dismissal in the 13th over by Avesh Khan, Gill took the innings forward and went on to score a sensational 94* off 51 balls with the help of two fours and seven sixes. Courtesy of his knock and cameos by Hardik Pandya (25 off 15) and David Miller (21* off 12), Gujarat posted a massive total of 227/2 in the first innings. Only Avesh Khan (1/34, 4 overs) and Mohsin Khan (1/42 in 3 overs) were amongst the wickets for LSG.
Lucknow fail to keep up with the required run rate
In the second innings, Lucknow also got off to a great start as openers Kyle Mayers (48 off 32) and Quinton de Kock added 88 runs for the first wicket. Their partnership was ended courtesy of a stunner by Rashid Khan that dismissed Mayers.
Following his dismissal, things slowed down in the middle with Deepak Hooda finding it hard to get going. His struggle was ended in the 13th over as he got caught out against Mohammed Shami. LSG were behind the '8 ball' and just couldn't catch up with the required run rate which was getting higher with every dot ball. As a result, they could only manage to reach 171/7 in their allotted 20 overs with Quinton de Kock top scoring with 70 off 41 balls. Mohit Sharma was the pick of the bowlers for GT as he picked 4/29 in his four-over spell.
Gujarat Titans won the match by 56 runs and maintained their top spot on the points table with eight wins from 11 games.
