The Lucknow Super Giants' and Afghan fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq got himself involved in an on-field spat with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter, Virat Kohli. The incident occurred following the match between LSG and RCB at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, on Monday, May 2. The home side failed to chase a below-par score and lost the match by 18 runs in their IPL 2023 fixture.
During the 17th over of the match's second innings, Naveen and Virat got into a heated argument with each other. Furthermore, the dispute escalated when Naveen clashed with the RCB batter during the customary handshake yet again. Consequently, this incident drew in LSG's mentor and former Indian batter, Gautam Gambhir, as well. Post the match, Kohli was fined 100 per cent of his match fees, while Naveen was fined 50 per cent of his fees.
Notably, this was not the first instance where the Afghanistan bowler got into verbal spats with other players. Naveen-ul-Haq has fought in an array of contests over his career. He previously had on-field spats with Mohammad Amir and former Pakistan captain, Shahid Afridi. The incident occurred in 2020 during the match between Kandy Tuskers and Galle Gladiators in the inaugural Lanka Premier League (LPL).

Amir had a verbal spat with Mohammad Amir, and then he exchanged stern remarks with Afridi. Later, the Pakistan all-rounder advised Naveen to not be so abusive. The 46-year-old also stated that he has a good connection with the Afghan players. He added that the important value of the game is respect for teammates and opponents.
"My advice to the young player was simple, play the game and don't indulge in abusive talk. I have friends in the Afghanistan team and we have very cordial relations. Respect for teammates and opponents are the basic spirit of the game," Afridi tweeted after the incident.
“Always ready to take advice and give respect, Cricket is a gentleman’s game but if someone says you all are under our feet and will stay their then he is not only talking about me but also talking about my people,” the Afghan bowler had tweeted in reply to Afridi's advice back in December 2020.
