The Indian Premier League season 16 continued to thrill the fans with a doubleheader on Sunday, April 16. The first match of the day was between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders. Mumbai was playing without their regular captain Rohit Sharma who missed the game due to a stomach issue, with Suryakumar Yadav taking the captaincy responsibility.
MI won the toss and elected and invited KKR to bat first. The decision was vindicated by Cameron Green, who gave KKR their first blow by dismissing N. Jagadeesan in the second over. Despite losing his partner, Venkatesh Iyer continued to attack MI bowlers and made full use of the powerplay.
Wickets kept falling at the other end as Piyush Chawla dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the sixth over of the innings to give a second blow to KKR. Hrithik Shokeen dismissed Nitish Rana and Shardul Thakur to leave KKR at 123/4 after 12.5 overs.
At the other end, Iyer scored a scintillating hundred and entered the record books by becoming only the second batter from KKR to score a hundred in IPL history after Brendon McCullum. He went on to score 104 off 51 balls smashing six fours and nine sixes in his innings. Andre Russell played a brilliant cameo at the end of 21 off 11 balls to help KKR post 185/6 in their allotted 20 overs.
Hrithik Shokeen was the pick of the bowlers for MI, who picked up 2/34 in four overs. In reply, Mumbai got off to a rollicking start as openers Rohit Sharma, who came in as an impact player, and Ishan Kishan added 65 runs for the first wicket off just 29 balls.
Suyash Sharma gave the first blow to MI by dismissing Rohit for 20 off 13 balls. However, Kishan continued to wreak havoc from the other end and went on to score a sensational 58 off just 25 balls smashing five fours and five sixes in his innings.
Mumbai Indians recorded their second win of the season
After Varun Chakravarthy cleaned up Kishan in the eighth over, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma added 60 runs for the third wicket off 38 balls. Varma was cleaned up by Suyash Sharma, who destroyed his stumps to give KKR their third strike.
Following his dismissal, Tim David joined Suryakumar Yadav at the crease and played a brilliant cameo of 24 off 13 balls. MI lost two more wickets in the form of Suryakumar (43 off 25) and Nehal Wadhera (6 off 4) but eventually went on to chase down the target in 17.4 overs and won the match by five wickets. Suyash Sharma was the pick of the bowlers for KKR as he picked 2/27 in four overs. Venkatesh Iyer was awarded Player of the Match for his scintillating hundred despite KKR losing the game.
