Lucknow Super Giants have made it a habit of making a strong comeback in the latter stages of the innings, and they did exactly that during the clash against Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator of IPL 2023. LSG pacer Naveen-ul-Haq broke the back of the Mumbai innings with his decisive four-over spell and his double-wicket 11th over features in our Play of the Day.
Mumbai Indians were in a spot of bother after losing skipper Rohit Sharma and his opening partner Ishan Kishan inside the first six overs of the match. However, the five-time champions got back into the contest via Suryakumar Yadav and Cameron Green's counter-attacking partnership for the third wicket.
The duo were looking increasingly comfortable in the middle and were threatening to take their side well beyond the par score at the surface. But Afghan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq threw a spanner in their works after dismissing the dangerous Suryakumar Yadav with a clever change of pace delivery. He wasn't quite done just there as he also duped the well-set Cameron Green with a slower delivery in the same over to derail Mumbai's batting innings.
Lucknow pacers combined to put a lid on the scoring rate in the latter stages
Naveen, who had opened his account with the big wicket of Rohit Sharma earlier in the innings, dismissed Tilak Verma in his last over of the match to return with brilliant bowling figures of 4/38 in a must-win encounter. His bowling spell, coupled with young Indian pacer Yash Thakur's three-for restricted the Mumbai-based outfit to a par total of 182 runs in the first innings. Not to forget Mohsin Khan, who also delivered a sumptuous penultimate over to restrict the flow of the runs in the death overs.
