Ahead of the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League, Punjab Kings have appointed former India left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi as the team’s spin-bowling coach. The franchise broke the news on Monday, January 16, that the former spinner has been added to the team’s coaching setup for the IPL 2023.

Joshi was most recently a part of the India senior men's selection committee, where he served as the chairperson until Chetan Sharma took his place in the five-person panel in March 2020. He served with the committee up to January 2023, when the BCCI established a new panel. As his tenure with the selection committee came to an end, he shifted his focus and joined PBKS.

Sharing the news on their official Twitter account, the franchise wrote:

“We are excited to announce that former Indian left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi has been appointed as Punjab Kings’ spin bowling coach. #SherSquad, let's give him a warm welcome.”

PBKS add depth to their coaching unit

Joshi was a part of the Indian squad from 1996 to 2001, and he played 15 Tests and 69 ODIs during that time period. He ended his career with 69 ODI wickets from as many games, and 41 Test wickets. He has had the experience of playing the IPL as he was a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first two editions of the tournament in 2008 and 2009.

Speaking of his coaching career, he has been a part of Hyderabad, Jammu & Kashmir, and Assam’s Ranji Trophy teams. Additionally, he has previously served as the spin-bowling coach for the men's teams of Oman, Bangladesh, and the United States of America. Before the IPL 2023 auction, PBKS appointed veteran South African fast-bowler Charl Langeveldt as their bowling coach.

They also added former India opener Wasim Jaffer to their coaching unit as their batting coach, and also roped in former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Brad Haddin as the team’s assistant coach. After parting ways with former head coach Anil Kumble, PBKS signed Trevor Bayliss for the role, and also appointed senior batter Shikhar Dhawan as the team’s new captain for the upcoming edition.
