Royal Challengers Bangalore registered a thrilling seven-run win over table-toppers Rajasthan Royals in the 32nd match of the Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL) on April 23. Glenn Maxwell and Faf du Plessis recorded big fifties to help RCB post a total of 189/9 while batting first. Then Harshal Patel took three wickets and defended 20 runs in the last over to help Bangalore win two big points.
Rajasthan Royals won the toss and elected to field first at M Chinnaswamy Stadium with Riyan Parag missing out from the playing eleven. David Willey replaced Wayne Parnell for Royal Challengers Bangalore while Harshal Patel started as an impact player in the second innings.
RCB lost their star batter Virat Kohli on the innings' first delivery with Trent Boult picking up another first-over wicket. Boult also dismissed Shahbaz Ahmed in the third over who was promoted to bat in the no.3 position for the first time this season. But Faf and Glenn pulled off a 127-run stand for the third wicket with brilliant individual fifties.
Yashasvi Jaiswal ran out Faf with a direct throw in the 14th over and then Royals' bowlers made a good comeback to contain RCB from scoring a 200-plus total. Maxwell top-scored with 77 off 44 with the help of six fours and four sixes but the likes of Dinesh Karthik, Mahipal Lomror, and Suyash Prabhudessai struggled for the quick runs in the last few overs.
Mohammed Siraj gave Royal Challengers Bangalore a perfect start with Jos Buttler's valuable wicket. But the former Bangalore star Devdutt Padikkal recorded his first fifty in IPL 2023 as he added a 98-run partnership for the second wicket with Yashasvi. Padikkal scored 52 off just 34 while Yashasvi added 47 off 37 but Bangalore's bowlers dominated the middle overs.
Samson smashed crucial 22 off 15 while Shimron Hetmyer struggled with just three runs after facing nine deliveries. Dhruv Jurel produced 34* off 16 and Ashwin added quick 12 runs but Rajasthan Royals fell seven runs short of the target. Harshal Patel took three wickets while Siraj and Willey picked one each to restrict Rajasthan Royals to 182/6.
