Shubman Gill's sister Shahneel Gill was abused online by trolls after the Gujarat Titans opener scored an unbeaten century against Royal Challengers Bangalore to push them out of the playoffs race. Gill scored 104* off 52 balls, including five fours and eight sixes.
Royal Challengers Bangalore got knocked out of IPL 2023 as they lost to Gujarat Titans on Sunday, May 21 at THE M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. After being put into bat first, RCB posted a massive score of 197/5 in their allotted 20 overs courtesy of a sensational hundred by Virat Kohli (101* off 61). In reply, Gujarat chased down the target in 19.1 overs as Shubman Gill continued his stupendous form and brought up his second consecutive hundred of the season.
Following his incredible knock, Gill posted photo of his knock and captioned the post, “It begins now💙⚡️.” Shubman’s sister Shahneel also commented on the post as she wrote “My babyyy.”
However, as soon as she commented several trolls replied to her using expletives and bashed Gill for knocking RCB out. She was targeted in her last Instagram post as well where people hurled abuse in the comments section.
Coming back to the match, it was a must-win game for RCB as they desperately needed a win to qualify and get above Mumbai Indians who had already defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad and got to 16 points. RCB were on 14 points after 13 games and a win would’ve ensured their spot in the playoffs as they had a better net run rate than MI.
After being put into bat first, RCB openers Faf du Plessis and Kohli got their team off to a great start adding 67 runs off 43 balls. However, GT’s spin duo of Rashid Khan (1 wicket) and Noor Ahmad (2 wickets) brought their side back into the game with three quick wickets.
Virat Kohli stayed unfazed at the other end and got good support from Michael Bracewell (26 off 16) and Anuj Rawat (23* off 15) to help RCB to 197/5 in the first innings. In reply, Gujarat lost Wriddhiman Saha (12 off 14) early in the third over. Following the early loss, Vijay Shankar (53 off 35) and Gill got involved in a massive 123-run stand off 71 balls to crush RCB’s hopes.
Gill held his nerve despite a few wickets falling in the middle and took his side home in 19.1 overs with a sublime hundred as they won by six wickets. After topping the group with 20 points, GT will next face Chennai Super Kings in Qualifier 1 on Tuesday, May 23 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
