Chennai Super Kings (CSK) former skipper and wicketkeeper MS Dhoni missed a crucial catch behind the wickets. The veteran keeper gave Andre Russell a lifeline in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Monday, April 8.

The match was the 22nd encounter of the IPL 2024 season, with CSK winning the toss and electing to field first. KKR posted a modest total of 137/9 in their allotted 20 overs.

Russell came in to bat in the 17th over with the score at 112-6 following the dismissal of Rinku Singh. The all-rounder struggled to get going initially, scoring only one boundary off his first five deliveries as he faced the cutters of Mustafizur Rahman.

In the 18th over, Russell tried to go big, but his wild swing only managed to get an outside edge. The ball travelled towards Dhoni's right side, and the veteran wicketkeeper attempted a leap and stuck his right glove out. However, the ball did not stick, and Dhoni's trademark reflexes and agility were not on display during the attempt.

Fortunately for CSK, the dropped catch did not cost them too much, as Russell was dismissed for a run-a-ball 10 in the very next over by Tushar Deshpande.

CSK return to winning ways

Dhoni also missed out on a last-ball run-out opportunity. Visiting skipper Shreyas Iyer top-scored for the visitors with a modest 32-ball 34, while Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers for CSK with figures of 3-18 off his four overs.

CSK openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra took the crease in a bid to chase down the mere total and hand KKR their first defeat of the season. But the Shreyas Iyer-led side too didn't give up easily, taking the early wicket of the Kiwi batter. However, his opening partner played a captain's knock, ensuring there were no serious hiccups in the chase any further. At the end, Chennai won the game by seven wickets, getting themselves back to winning ways.
