Hunting down a target of 222 was never going to be a walk in the park after the lethal openers of the Rajasthan Royals were dismissed in the powerplay for scores of 4 (2) and 19 (17). However, Sanju Samson's boisterous innings kept his side in the hunt for the majority of the chase against Delhi Capitals on May 7. Racking up his fifth half-century in IPL 2024 in 26 deliveries, it seemed as if he would single-handedly win his side the match.

However, the fourth delivery of the 16th over, when RR required 60 in 26 deliveries, he holed out to long-on where Shai Hope hung on to the catch. In real-time as well as the initial couple of replays, it seemed he was out. However, the third replay with a different angle raised eyebrows. Despite it being a tight call, the third-umpire did not take much time, promptly relaying the decision to the on-field umpire.

Samson was visibly frustrated and even walked back to the middle to debrief the umpires and ask the basis of the decision as Hope's leg seemed in contact with the boundary cushion from one angle. However, he was ruled out as he walked off dejectedly, with RR ultimately falling 20 runs short.

Post the completion of the match, Pant and Samson led their teams during the customary handshakes. Pant was also seen offering commiserations to Samson with a cordial hug, showcasing his respect for his Indian teammate. A glimpse of the same was posted on the official handle of the Indian Premier League posted on X.
