IPL 2024: Skipper Gaikwad checks wind direction using soil during CSK vs RCB

The opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 started with a bang as the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured a commanding victory over the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on 22nd March.

In a video that has gone viral, CSK's newly-appointed captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was seen checking the wind direction using the soil on the boundary covers. This practice reminded many of the legendary MS Dhoni, who was renowned for using this method during his tenure as both the Indian national team captain and leader of the CSK.

MS Dhoni passes on the captaincy baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad

CSK's captaincy was passed from Dhoni to Gaikwad, and the young skipper seemed keen to use the former's successful methods. Dhoni was known for his attention to detail, often using the soil to gauge wind patterns before setting fields or making bowling changes.

Speaking about the match, Mustafizur Rahman's brilliant performance with the ball helped the hosts restrict RCB to a total of 173/6. Rahman picked up four wickets and was awarded the Player of the Match award. Ravindra Jadeja anchored CSK's chase and scored an unbeaten 25.

Along with Jadeja, Shivam Dube scored an unbeaten 34 runs to help CSK win the game. The defending champions registered the first win of the tournament and will play Gujarat Titans next
