Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) faced off in Match 22 of the Indian Premier League 2024 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Monday. CSK won the toss and opted to bowl first on a hard deck. KKR’s struggle started from the very first delivery as Tushar Deshpande sent Phil Salt packing. Sunil Narine (27 off 20) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (24 off 18) started rebuilding the innings. The duo was dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja in a span of five balls to turn momentum in the hosts' favour.

Mustafizur Rahman ended Shreyas Iyer’s arduous stay, as the Kolkata skipper made 34 off 32. Venkatesh Iyer continued his lean patch as he walked back after three runs, succumbing to Jadeja. Ramandeep Singh was promoted up the order, and he contributed 13 runs. Rinku Singh’s magic did not come to fruition in Chepauk. The southpaw mustered just nine runs off 14 balls. Andre Russel lacked gas with his 10 off 10 and KKR huffed and puffed their way to 137.

CSK had no qualms in going easy with the chase. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra had put just 27 on board in 3.1 overs. Ravindra departed thereafter, and Daryl Mitchell was promoted up the order. The duo stitched a 50-run partnership for the second wicket, and CSK had set their one leg on the victory lawn. Mitchell got out after 25 run inning and Shivam Dube entered the fray as Impact Substitute. A 35-run partnership with Gaikwad and Dube, as the southpaw walked by contributing 28 off 18.

Chennai fans were treated with MS Dhoni walking in at number five. A rare sight these days, and they were not bothered if CSK had only two runs left to score. Dhoni dodged some deliveries, and the present CSK captain was on strike in the 18th over.
