In a pretty one-sided encounter at the Chepauk in Chennai, Punjab Kings emerged victorious against Chennai Super Kings in the 49th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Wednesday, May 1.

Being asked to bat first, Chennai Super Kings put up a challenging total of 162/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Ruturaj Gaikwad led the charge with a splendid knock of 62 runs off 48 deliveries, supported by Ajinkya Rahane's 29 runs. However, the CSK innings lacked substantial partnerships, with wickets falling at regular intervals. Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar starred with the ball for PBKS, picking up crucial wickets to restrict the CSK batting lineup.

In response, Punjab Kings chased down the target comfortably with 13 balls to spare, finishing at 163/3 in 17.5 overs. Jonny Bairstow played a blistering innings, scoring 46 runs off just 30 balls before being dismissed by Shivam Dube. Rilee Rossouw contributed with a quickfire 43 off 23 deliveries, setting the stage for a successful run chase. Shashank Singh and Sam Curran played sensible innings to guide PBKS to victory.

Among the CSK bowlers, Shardul Thakur, Richard Gleeson, and Shivam Dube managed to scalp a wicket each, but they couldn't stem the flow of runs as Punjab Kings chased down the target comfortably.

Probably 50-60 runs short: Ruturaj Gaikwad

After the match, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad admitted feeling the pressure during the toss and acknowledged the team's batting shortfall, attributing it partly to unfavourable pitch conditions. He expressed concern over the team's struggles, particularly in light of missing players due to injuries and early exits.
