Mumbai Indians (MI) upheld their momentum, securing a convincing seven-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2024 clash held at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 11, Thursday.

Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to field first at the ground, renowned for its batting-friendly surface, particularly favoring chasing sides.

RCB faced an early setback, losing the wicket of the tournament's current leading run-scorer, Virat Kohli, who fell to Jasprit Bumrah's delivery in the third over. The following over saw another blow for RCB as Akash Madhwal sent back Will Jacks to the pavilion. However, Rajat Patidar alongside Faf du Plessis steadied RCB’s innings. Patidar was dismissed soon after scoring a fifty while the Proteas veteran departed after a blistering 40-ball 61-run knock.

Following the departure of du Plessis, Dinesh Karthik came to bat with RCB standing at 153/5.  The veteran wicketkeeper-batter unleashed a powerful onslaught, amassing a gritty 53* off 23 deliveries to propel RCB to a challenging total of 196 runs. Bumrah was the pick of bowlers of the five-time champions, finishing with excellent figures of 5/21. Apart from Madhwal, Shreyas Gopal and Gerald Coetzee also claimed one wicket each for MI.

Suryakumar Yadav stars in MI’s chase

Mumbai Indians produced a flying start in pursuit of their 197-run target, with Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma adding 101 runs for the first wicket. Akash Deep provided RCB with a significant breakthrough, dismissing the wicketkeeper-batter who had scored 69 from a mere 34 deliveries. The former captain, on the other hand, fell to Will Jacks in the 12th over when MI reached 139.

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav, designated as the Impact Player, played a spectacular innings, reaching his half-century in just 17 deliveries. The world's top-ranked T20I batter's innings ended at 52 which he achieved from 19 balls, including five boundaries and four maximums. However, RCB's attack came too late, with MI racing to 176 runs by the 14th over, losing three wickets. Later, captain Hardik Pandya, struck a quickfire 21* off just six balls as the hosts chased down the target in 15.3 overs, securing their second this season.
