Rajasthan Royals took on Punjab Kings in Match 27 of the Indian Premier League 2024 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on Saturday, April 13. The pitch was of black soil and a tinge of grass on it, which was anticipated to assist the bowlers. RR won the toss and opted to bowl first. Atharva Taide and Jonny Bairstow departed after scoring 15 runs each. Prabhsimran Singh followed suit, scoring 10 runs. Skipper Sam Curran had only six runs to contribute.

Jitesh Sharma’s struggle displayed the demons in the pitch for shot-making. He walked back after a struggling 29-run knock. Shashank Singh could not replicate his heroics and Liam Livingstone batted way too down the order. While Livingstone was good with 21 runs, it was Ashutosh Sharma who stole the show. His 31 runs in 16 balls steered PBKS to a fighting total of 147 losing eight wickets. For RR, Keshav Maharaj shined with two wickets.

RR seemed comfortable while chasing initially. But Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tanush Kotian departed in quick successions, scoring 39 and 24 respectively. Sanju Samson (18 off 14) was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada on a delivery that kept low. Riyan Parag (23 off 18) could not extend his stay for more than 23 runs. Dhruv Jurel who came up the order, only worsened the situation for RR with six runs in 11 balls.

Shimron Hetmyer comes to RR’s rescue

When Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell were at the crease, RR needed 33 runs in 16 balls. Hetmyer smashed Harshal Patel for a six and a four in the 18th over. Powell scored two consecutive boundaries off Sam Curran before getting dismissed on a subsequent delivery. The final over demanded 10 runs, with Hetmyer on strike and Arshdeep Singh with the ball.

The Guna-born pacer bowled two perfect yorkers, and the pressure mounted for RR. With 10 needed off four, the Caribbean sent one straight down the ground for a maximum. With two runs in the very next delivery, Rajasthan required two off the last two deliveries. Arshdeep bowled a meaty full toss at the hip and the southpaw dispatched it for a six, thereby leading RR to a win in a final-over thriller by three wickets.
