Match 29 of the IPL 2025 saw Mumbai Indians cruise past Delhi Capitals by a narrow 12 runs at the iconic Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on April 13. Delhi, who had won four games on the trot, were handed their first loss of the season, while MI registered just their second win in six games However, the two players who grabbed eyeballs and had a huge role to play in the game were Karun Nair and Karn Sharma, both introduced as impact players and both delivering memorable performances.
Coming in as an impact player for Mukesh Kumar, Nair nearly pulled off a stunner in his first game after IPL 2022. Walking in after the side lost Jake Fraser-McGurk off the very first ball, Karun played a brilliant innings, smashing 89 off 40 deliveries. It was his first half-century in the IPL after seven seasons, making the selectors take notice of him once again.
Known for his Test triple century in 2016, Karun has been knocking on the doors of national selection with a phenomenal domestic season, where he top-scored for the side in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20 Cup) and Vijay Hazare Trophy (List-A competition) and garnered well over 800 runs in the Ranji as well.
The right-hand batter's return to the league could not have been more memorable. He reached his fifty in just 22 balls, including hammering Jasprit Bumrah for 18 runs in one over. By the end of the powerplay, DC were already at 72/1, largely thanks to his aggressive batting display. His 119-run partnership with Abishek Porel was the second-highest for the franchise against MI for the second wicket or lower. But his dismissal at 89 in the 12th over triggered a collapse that DC could not recover from.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians had earlier posted a total of 206, despite an early setback when Rohit Sharma fell cheaply. They were rescued by Ryan Rickelton's 41 and useful contributions from the middle order. Yet, the real match-turner came in the second innings.
Karn Sharma, brought in as the Impact Player for Rohit, scripted a remarkable comeback for MI with the ball. The leg spinner finished with three important wickets of Abishek Porel, Tristan Stubbs, and KL Rahul, respectively. His spell put the Capitals under pressure, leading to victory for the five-time champions. Notably, the 37-year-old earned his second Player of the Match award in his IPL career.
"Feels very good that my hard work has paid off. Whenever I get a chance, I want to do my best. It’s a big tournament, only 12 can play. I just focus on my process, rest is not in my hands. KL Rahul’s wicket was my favourite. That catch was very important at that stage of the game. I pray a lot that I do well when I get a chance and that the teams win. There was no dew in the first innings, changing the ball meant that we got some more grip. That was good," he said at the post-match interview.
