Delhi Capitals (DC) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) kicked off their IPL 2025 campaign facing each other at the Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Monday. The game, despite being a home fixture for DC, was played away from Delhi, making it the second consecutive year they adopted Visakhapatnam as their secondary home.
Winning his first toss as DC captain, Axar Patel opted to field first and was missing KL Rahul due to personal reasons. However, LSG put up a strong total of 209/8 in their 20 overs. The innings were dominated by Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran, who played explosive knocks to give LSG the upper hand.
Marsh was the attacker early on, smashing a quick 72 off 36 balls, including six fours and six sixes. He reached his half-century in just 21 balls, making it his joint-fastest half-century in T20 cricket. He punished the DC bowlers before Mukesh Kumar finally dismissed him in the 12th over.
However, Pooran continued the assault, bringing up his fifty in 24 balls. He was particularly attacked by Tristan Stubbs, hammering him for 28 runs in a single over including four sixes and a boundary. The southpaw eventually fell for 75 off 30 balls, cleaned up by Mitchell Starc in the 15th over.

Furthermore, David Miller played a crucial role with an unbeaten 27 off 19 balls and hit two consecutive sixes in the final two balls of the innings. Ayush Badoni, Shahbaz Ahmed, and others chipped in, though wickets kept falling towards the end. Rishabh Pant, captaining LSG for the first time, had a forgettable outing with the bat, scoring a six-ball duck.
Delhi Capitals’ bowlers had a mixed outing. While Starc was expensive, conceding 42 runs in four overs, he managed to take three crucial wickets, including the dangerous Pooran. Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with 2/20 in his four overs and dismissing both Pant and Badoni. Mukesh and debutant Vipraj Nigam also picked up a wicket each, while Patel was economical.
Chasing 210 to win, Delhi Capitals will need their batting unit to step up significantly. With big names like Faf du Plessis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Stubbs in the line-up, they have the firepower, but the execution will be important.
