Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) finished with a formidable first-innings total of 238/3 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Match 21 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) clash at the Eden Gardens, on Tuesday, April 8.
While captains generally like to bat first in afternoon games, Ajinkya Rahane decided to bowl on a hot and humid afternoon in the City of Joy. LSG's opening duo of Aiden Markam and Mitchell Marsh made life difficult for the KKR bowlers as they played some glorious shots during an enterprising 99-run partnership.
Harshit Rana gave KKR a much-needed breakthrough in the 11th over, as he dismissed Markram for a 28-ball 47. However, this brought the in-form Nicholas Pooran to the crease. He added 71 runs off just 30 balls with Marsh. The Australian T20 captain was eventually dismissed for a 48-ball 81 by Andre Russell in the 16th over.
LSG promoted Abdul Samad up the order to take advantage of the short boundary on one side. However, Pooran took the onus upon himself to take LSG to a huge score. The former West Indies T20 skipper hit seven fours and eight sixes in his unbeaten knock of 87 off 36 balls. Rana bagged two wickets for the Knight but conceded 51 runs from his four overs. Varun Chakaravarthy was the only KKR bowler who finished with an economy rate of less than 8. However, he could not take a wicket.
After the first innings came to an end, Marsh said that batting got easier once the ball got older. He also explained what he is doing behind the scenes to improve his batting.
"To be honest I thought 180-190 was par, but the ball came on to the bat better once it got a bit older. Obviously, blessed to have Pooran in our side. I have played against him (Markram) a lot, but it's nice to bat along with with him. We are traditional with the way we play. We try to play good cricket shots. It's a small ground with a fast outfield. I have been staying good with my routine and thinking. I try to watch the ball and have fun. Hopefully I keep continue scoring runs going forward. Hopefully I watch the boys get a win," Marsh told the official broadcaster.
