The Indian Premier League 2025 kicked off in grand style at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, with a bright opening ceremony featuring Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, singer Shreya Ghoshal, actress Disha Patani, and Punjabi sensation Karan Aujla. The exciting season opener between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) began with, RCB captain Rajat Patidar winning the toss and opted to bowl first.
Josh Hazlewood made an immediate impact by dismissing Quinton de Kock for just 4 runs in the first over. The early setback, however, did not stop KKR, as captain Ajinkya Rahane and Sunil Narine stabilised the innings in no time. The duo cleared the fence at ease as their 103-run partnership off just 55 balls gave the defending champions a solid start, with Rahane scoring a 25-ball half-century.
Just when it seemed like the side would post a massive total, Rasikh Salam provided the breakthrough by dismissing Narine for 44 off 26 balls. Krunal Pandya then turned the game in RCB’s favor by removing Rahane (56 off 31) and Venkatesh Iyer (6 off 7) in quick succession. KKR, who were at one point at 107/1 in 10 overs, suddenly found themselves struggling at 125/4.
With the fall of key wickets, KKR’s innings lost momentum. Rinku Singh tried to control the innings but was soon dismissed for 12 off 10 balls by Krunal, who finished with figures of 3/29 in four overs. Andre Russell failed to fire and was bowled by Suyash Sharma for just 4 runs.
Angkrish Raghuvanshi provided some fight with a crucial 30 off 22 balls, but RCB’s bowlers, particularly Hazlewood (2/22) and Yash Dayal (1/25), kept the pressure. Harshit Rana fell in the final over, leaving Ramandeep Singh (6*) and Spencer Johnson (1*) to take KKR to 174/8 in their allotted 20 overs.
With 175 runs needed for victory, RCB’s batting unit, featuring Virat Kohli, Phil Salt, and Rajat Patidar, will look to chase down the target and start their IPL 2025 campaign on a winning note.
