Axar Patel’s Delhi Capitals are asked to chase down a target of 160 after restricting Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to 159/6 in Match No. 40 of the Indian Premier League 2025 at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Tuesday.
The visiting team, after winning the toss, opted to bowl first, citing the dew factor. Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant, leading LSG against his former franchise, admitted he too would have bowled first. While DC brought in Dushmantha Chameera for Mohit Sharma, LSG remained unchanged, with Mayank Yadav in their Impact list.
The hosts got off to a flying start thanks to the opening partnership between Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh. Markram brought up his fourth fifty of the season in just 30 balls, while Marsh firmly held the other end. The duo guided LSG to 87/0 by the halfway point, raising expectations of a 180-plus total.
However, Chameera, who was playing his first game of the season, broke the opening stand by dismissing Markram for 52 off 33 balls. Nicholas Pooran walked in at No. 3 but managed just nine off five balls before falling to Mitchell Starc. Power-hitter Abdul Samad, who was promoted to No. 4, was caught and bowled by Mukesh Kumar for two, and Marsh was later yorked for 45 in the same over.
While skipper Pant, who surprisingly did not come out to bat and was seen with his right hand heavily strapped, triggering speculation of an injury. In his absence, David Miller and Ayush Badoni stabilized the innings. Miller played the anchor role while Badoni, introduced as an Impact Player, found the boundaries at ease. Notably, Badoni was dropped by Tristan Stubbs on three. The duo’s stand added crucial runs in the death overs, taking LSG to 159/6. While Pant walked in when two balls were left in the innings, but recorded another zero-figure to his account in this season.
