Chennai Super Kings (CSK) posted 176/5 in their 20 overs against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 38 of the IPL 2025 season on Sunday, April 20, at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. After winning the toss, MI skipper Hardik Pandya opted to bowl first, keeping in mind the dew factor that influences evening games in Mumbai.
The decision paid early rewards, as young Ashwani Kumar, despite being expensive later, removed Rachin Ravindra early in the powerplay. CSK’s debutant, 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre, displayed his brilliance with a 15-ball 32, smashing four boundaries and two maximums. However, Deepak Chahar ended his knock.
CSK were 66/3 at the end of nine overs, with Shaik Rasheed also back in the dugout after scoring 19 runs off 20 balls. Following this, Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja carried on the innings. Dube initially struggled, reaching 16 off 19 balls, but fired in the back end, hitting two boundaries and four sixes — including three in one over off Ashwani — to bring up a 30-ball fifty.
Jadeja, on the other hand, shifted gears later, targeting Trent Boult in the final over to finish unbeaten on 53 off 35 balls. His innings included four boundaries and two sixes, helping CSK post a respectable total. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah got rid of the dangerous Dube and skipper MS Dhoni in the span of nine balls, ending with figures of 2/25. Mitchell Santner was effective with the ball as well, keeping the run rate in check during the middle overs.
