Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) recovered from a precarious position to finish on a fighting score of 169/8 in the first innings of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Wednesday, April 2.
Shubman Gill won the toss and opted to field first in front of a packed stadium in the Garden City of India. Arshad Khan drew first blood for Gujarat as he dismissed Virat Kohli in the second over. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj used the helpful conditions to his advantage and picked up the wickets of Devdutt Padikkal and Phil Salt inside the powerplay. RCB skipper Rajat Patidar was dismissed in the seventh over as the hosts slumped to 4/42.
Jitesh Sharma and Liam Livingstone stitched a much-needed partnership of 52 runs for the fifth wicket off 38 balls. The wicketkeeper-batter was looking in good touch, but R Sai Kishore ended his stay at the crease after he had scored a 21-ball 33. The left-arm spinner also accounted for the wicket of Krunal Pandya as RCB were staring down the barrel at 104/6 in the 15th over.
Livingstone rode his luck, as he was dropped twice while Jos Buttler missed a chance to stump him. The England all-rounder added some crucial runs at the backend of the innings, smashing three sixes off the 18th over bowled by Rashid Khan. The third six helped him reach a half-century off 39 balls.
Siraj returned to bowl the penultimate over, and he took the big wicket of Livingstone, who was dismissed for a 40-ball 54. The Hyderabad pacer finished with a three-for. Tim David played a brilliant hand at the death as his 32 off 18 deliveries helped RCB set a target of 170 runs. This isn't a familiar Chinnaswamy surface, as the new ball had a decent amount of help for the pacers, and the spinners also found reasonable turn.

After the first innings, R Sai Kishore, who finished with excellent figures of 2/22 in his four overs, admitted that he found purchase off the surface. He said that bowling like a red-ball game and backing his instincts helped him succeed.
"I felt when you bowl into the wicket, it was assisting the spinners, but you never know until both teams bowl on it. Having a good shape on the ball and then trying to bowl as hard as I could, bowling like a proper red-ball game. To be relevant in T20 cricket, you need to keep evolving, I was confident enough and went with my instincts. It's like a carrom ball, I get a bit of dip on it, can't cal what it is, but I do like to bowl it (on his special ball)," Kishore said after the innings on air.
