Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) won the toss and opted to field first against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Match No.7 of the IPL 2025. LSG made one change to their lineup, bringing in Avesh Khan in place of Shahbaz Ahmed. The decision was made, as Shahbaz struggled in the previous match against Delhi Capitals, failing with both bat and ball.
The Hyderabad-based franchise started its innings on a strong note. However, LSG’s bowlers ensured they never let the opposition batters settle, picking up wickets at regular intervals. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma stitched a short 15-run stand, as the latter fell early to Shardul Thakur for just six runs. Thakur delivered again on the very next ball, dismissing Ishan Kishan for a golden duck.
Despite the double setback, Head began a counterattack. The Australian batter took full advantage of two of his dropped catches, smashing 47 off 28 balls. His innings was brought to an end by Prince Yadav, who bowled him with a beautiful delivery. Meanwhile, wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen was run out bizarrely when the ball deflected from bowler Prince, hitting the stumps at the non-striker's end, ending Klaasen's innings at 26.
Nitish Kumar Reddy tried to steady the ship with a well-made 32 off 28 balls, before falling prey to Ravi Bishnoi. Aniket Verma played an important cameo, hammering 36 off just 13 balls, including five sixes. However, wickets kept falling, and the Orange Army couldn't finish and the way they expected. Captain Pat Cummins struck a few maximums, scoring 18 off 4 balls.
Thakur was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 4 for 34, his best performance in the IPL. The last two overs saw just 10 runs being scored, as LSG’s bowlers restricted SRH to 190/9 in 20 overs. While 190 might be a below-par total considering recent high-scoring matches, SRH still have a strong bowling attack capable of defending it. However, LSG will be happy with their effort.
