The first innings of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) versus Mumbai Indians (MI) could have been very different had Heinrich Klaasen not played one of the finest innings of the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League 2025.
Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to bowl first at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday, April 23. Mumbai Indians' new-ball duo of Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar wreaked havoc, dismissing the top-four batters in the SRH lineup inside the first five overs. Ishan Kishan, however, was unlucky, as he didn't request for a DRS after being given out hesitantly by the umpire.
Aniket Verma tried to forge a partnership with Klaasen, but his innings was cut short by MI skipper Pandya in the ninth over with only 35 runs on the board. Abhinav Manohar came out to bat as the Impact Player. Klaasen led the way by taking the attack to the MI bowlers, while the youngster was happy playing second fiddle.
Klaasen scored a brilliant 71 off 44 deliveries, hitting nine fours and two sixes. He was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah in the penultimate over. Klaasen's partnership with Manohar yielded 99 runs off 63 balls. Boult, who had picked up two wickets in his first spell, bagged another couple in the last over. He scored a gritty 43 off 37 balls, helping SRH finish at 143/8.

During the mid-innings break, Manohar admitted that SRH are a few runs short. However, he said that the wicket wasn't as flat as it appeared on live television.
"143 is a bit low on this wicket. It isn’t as flat as it looks on TV, the new ball is moving a bit. Gets easier as the game goes along. The fast bowlers weren’t getting much movement later, and the spinners couldn’t get much hold either. From the past three games, I’ve been expecting a chance (as impact sub) so was ready. He (Klaasen) asked me to take the game till the 15th over, and then we can play catch-up from there. To watch him bat from the other end was amazing," he said while speaking on air after the first innings.
